What it is

Preformed foam plus a cement slurry.

Cellular concrete — also called cellular grout — is a cementitious mix with a foamed cellular structure. It is placed as a fluid, then sets in place. The primary spec is cast density at placement, in pounds per cubic foot.

A neat Type IL cement slurry (the featured carrier is about ~108 pcf) is expanded with preformed foam from Aerix Industries AERLITE / AERLITE-iX. Sand is optional. Permeable and non-permeable mixes are both available. The lightest mix starts at 27 pcf; we adjust density upward — up to about 100 pcf — when the engineer specifies it.

Volume Concrete makes the mix with volumetric trucks and mobile silos. That is on-site / mobile production — not plant-batched only.

This is not everyday heavy CLSM. Conventional flowable fill is still a relatively heavy cementitious fill. Cellular grout is foamed down to a specified low density so the fill stays light and pumpable.

It is also not polyurethane foam fill. PU foam is a polymer. Cellular Backfill is a cementitious grout that sets like concrete at the density you call out.

The lightest mix is 27 pcf. Density is adjusted upward when the engineer calls it out — up to about 100 pcf. The ~38 pcf cellular grout is a common mid-range example; typical strengths on that mix are approximate, not a universal guarantee.

Base slurry ~108 pcf

Neat cement slurry used as the carrier before foam expansion. Type IL cement and foam from Aerix Industries AERLITE / AERLITE-iX expand that carrier to the specified cast density at placement. The mix is made with volumetric trucks and mobile silos.

Why cellular

Less weight. It goes where soil will not.

Use cellular concrete when the job needs a fill that starts light — 27 pcf — and can be dialed denser if the engineer specifies it. These are material characteristics, not a substitute for project engineering.

  • Lightweight

    We start at 27 pcf — far below conventional soil or heavy flowable fill — and go denser only when the engineer specifies it. That low unit weight can reduce load on structures and soils.

  • Pumpable

    The mix is placed as a fluid. It can be pumped into tanks, pipe interiors, annular space, and other tight access where dump-and-compact fill will not go.

  • Fills voids

    Flowable placement occupies irregular voids without mechanical compaction the way soil fill requires.

  • Reduces lateral load after set

    Once the grout sets, the low unit weight can reduce lateral load on foundation walls compared with conventional backfill. Confirm design values with the project engineer. This is not a waterproofing claim.

What is cellular concrete (cellular grout)?

Cellular concrete — also called cellular grout or lightweight cellular concrete (LDCC) — is a cementitious mix with a foamed cell structure. Volume Concrete makes it as preformed foam plus a Type IL cement slurry. It places as a fluid, then sets in place. The spec you call out is cast density at placement, in pounds per cubic foot. It is not polyurethane foam fill.

What density range do you produce?

The lightest Cellular Backfill mix starts at 27 pcf. We dial density up when the engineer specifies it, typically up to about 100 pcf. A common mid-range job mix is about 38 pcf. Strength follows the mix design — typical packet values for that ~38 pcf example are approximate, not a guarantee.

What is the difference between permeable and non-permeable mixes?

Both are available. Permeable cellular grout is designed so water can move through the set mass. Non-permeable (non-permeating) mixes are used when the fill should not act as a drain path — a common callout for slip-liner and pipe decommissioning. The engineer specifies which one. Sand is optional on either.

How is cellular grout different from CLSM or regular flowable fill?

Conventional CLSM / flowable fill is still a relatively heavy cementitious fill. Cellular grout is foamed down to a specified low density so it stays light and pumpable — starting at 27 pcf instead of soil-like unit weights. It is cementitious, not a polymer foam. Confirm design values with the project engineer; this is not a waterproofing claim.
